From the late 1960s to the final days of the former Soviet Union, a burgeoning art scene was flourishing in the Black Sea port of Odessa in the Ukraine.  Although the paintings were traditional in content, the artists themselves were considered artistic revolutionaries as they were one of the first groups of Eastern Bloc artists to exhibit in the West, while permanently residing in the former Soviet Union.  The majority of works have a lightness, which reflected a more open artistic atmosphere particular to the Black Sea region.
